Reading and Prayer – Sunday, November 22

Mark 10:17-27 (NLT)

As Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

“Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked. “Only God is truly good. But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. You must not cheat anyone. Honor your father and mother.’”

“Teacher,” the man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.”

Looking closely at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

At this the man’s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!” This amazed them. But Jesus said again, “Dear children, it is very hard to enter the Kingdom of God. In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!”

Prayer

Lord God, by your creative power you have given us life.

Bring to our mind the blessings of this life, and hear our silent thanks.

Bring to our mind the ways in which we can share our life with others

in response to your great gift.

Lord God, by your Spirit you have given us hope.

Bring to our mind the many ways in which we experience hope, and hear our silent thanks.

Bring to our mind the ways in which we can share our hope with others in response to your great gift.

Lord God, by your Son you have given us love.

Bring to our mind the many ways in which we experience love, and hear our silent thanks.

Bring to our mind the ways in which we can share our love with others

in response to your great gift.

We are here today, Lord God, because all good things in our lives

have come from Your hand.

Bring to our mind the many resources with which you have entrusted us, and hear our silent thanks.

Bring to our mind the ways in which we can share our resources

in response to your great gift.

As we share all we have, Father, as we share all we are,

may we do so in celebration of your creative power, of your Holy Spirit, of your Son, our Saviour, our friend.

Hear us, Lord God, as we share our compassion with those in need; with the lonely, the abused, the impoverished, the confused, the lost, the sick, the dying, the grieving.

As you hear our prayers, Father, help us to hear them as well, and help us respond as you would respond, in love, in grace, in mercy, with open hands and open hearts.

Send us into the world with the creative power of new life.

Send us into the world with the hope of your Spirit alive within us.

Send us into the world overflowing with the love of Jesus Christ.

Send us into the world in celebration of you,

as we give our lives in response to all you are, to all you have given,

to all you have done.

Amen.
