Reading and Prayer – October 15

Psalm 104:5-9

You placed the world on its foundation
    so it would never be moved.
You clothed the earth with floods of water,
    water that covered even the mountains.
At your command, the water fled;
    at the sound of your thunder, it hurried away.
Mountains rose and valleys sank
    to the levels you decreed.
Then you set a firm boundary for the seas,
    so they would never again cover the earth.

Dear Father,

Thank you that you are the one who has set everything in place. Thank you that all of creation is under your command. It is such a comfort to know that you are the one who holds everything in your hands.

We pray that we would recognise this today. When it feels like the world is crumbling around us, remind us that you set it on its foundation, and that it will never be moved. When we are feeling like the waves of life are in danger of sweeping us away, remind us that at your command the water fled. When we are anxious, or uncertain, remind us that you have set firm boundaries, and we don’t need to fear when we trust in you.

This doesn’t mean that life will always go the way we want it to, or that nothing will shake us. But it does mean that we have a firm foundation. Father, you are what we build our lives on. Thank you that you never let us go, and that nothing is too much for you!
