Reading and Prayer – November 28

The candles of Advent remind us that God is the Creator of light. The Bible says that “God is light and in him is no darkness at all.” In the gentle warmth of these tiny flames, we find comfort and assurance. We gather in their glow seeking hope, peace, joy and love. When we light the candles, we prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus, the Light of the World.

The first candle of Advent is the Candle of Hope.

As people from long ago looked forward to the birth of Jesus, we also wait for the coming of the Lord. May this candle help us to recall that even in the darkest shadows we are all God’s children of light.

The Bible says, in Psalm 33:22, “May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you.”

“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness — on them light has shined.” (Isaiah 9:2)

Lord as we look to the birth of Jesus, grant that the light of your love for us will help us to become lights in the lives of those around us. Prepare our hearts for the joy and gladness of your coming, for Jesus is our hope. Amen.
