Reading and Prayer – May 9

Reading: Proverbs 23:22-25

Listen to your father, who gave you life,

    and do not despise your mother when she is old.

Buy the truth and do not sell it—

    wisdom, instruction and insight as well.

The father of a righteous child has great joy;

    The parent of a wise child rejoices in them.

May your father and mother rejoice;

    may she who gave you birth be joyful!

Lord God, we give you thanks for our mothers.

In bringing forth life, they join with you in Creation’s song.

In nourishing the helpless, they mirror your mercy and grace.

In guiding, directing and protecting their children,

               they minister your providential care.

In patience, forgiveness, healing and unconditional love,

               they teach us of your divine love.

In tireless self sacrifice and devotion to family, they point the way

               to how we serve you through the family of the Church.

Teach us in our homes, our churches, our communities,

               our workplaces, our land,

to value the work which mothers do as crucial to our well-being,

               as timeless in impact, and as a gift of your grace to the world.

Lord God, we pray for mothers and fathers

               within our families and our church family.

Bless them with deep reserves of energy, patience and love.

In times of isolation and loneliness, may they find support and security.

In times of hectic activity, may they find an inner strength and peace.

In times of sickness, may they find the help their family needs.

In times of financial stress, may they find solutions

               to gain stability and perspective.

In times of turmoil and disagreement,

               may they find an inner peace to guide them.

In all times, may a deep sense of your presence and love

               be with all those who care for our children and our families.
