Reading and Prayer – May 31

Reading:

James 4:13-17

Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.

Prayer:

Lord God, as we come to you in prayer, we realize our need for forgiveness.

We have not praised you for all the blessings we have enjoyed.

We have not trusted you, but have relied only upon ourselves.

We have not served you and our neighbors with love, but have acted selfishly.

We have not glorified you, but have sought glory only for ourselves.

We have sinned.

Heal us, forgive us, and set us free to be the people you would have us be,

living in love and compassion.

Hear our silent confessions, O Lord…

Thanks be to you, Lord our God, who remains faithful, even when we are not faithful.

Thanks be to you, Lord our God, who forgives us, even when we fail time and again.

Thanks be to you, Lord our God, who has given us the gift of salvation and new life.

Thanks be to you, Lord our God, who gives us his Spirit, and gives us strength to live

as the Children of God.

Amen.
