Reading and Prayer – May 3

Reading: 1 John 1:8-10

If we claim that we’re free of sin, we’re only fooling ourselves. A claim like that is errant nonsense. On the other hand, if we admit our sins, make a clean break of them, he won’t let us down; God will be true to himself. He’ll forgive our sins and purge us of all wrongdoing. If we claim that we’ve never sinned, we out and out contradict God, make a liar out of him. A claim like that only shows off our ignorance of God.

Prayer: (Psalm 103:8-12)

Lord, you are compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.

You will not constantly accuse us, nor remain angry forever.

You do not punish us for all our sins; you do not deal harshly with us, as we deserve.

For your unfailing love toward those who respect and honour you

is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth.

You have removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west.

We praise you, Lord, and we thank you for your grace, mercy, forgiveness and love.

Amen.
