Reading and Prayer – May 28

James 4:1-6

What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the Spirit he has caused to dwell in us? But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

My Lord and God,

I know that your Commandments say that I should not envy, or covet other peoples lives, or what they have.

Please forgive me, for even when I try not to fall into these things, my mind still wanders there.

Please forgive me for every time I do not get control of my thoughts quick enough.

I want to have nice things.

I want to have nice people in my life, and sometimes it really bothers me when others have these things,

and I don’t.

Sometimes I can’t stand it when other people, even evil people seem to keep prospering and winning, and I feel like I keep struggling and loosing.

Please forgive me, and help me to stop having this unhelpful and destructive emotional reaction,

and instead to choose to recognize the blessings I have.

Just being able to come to you today in prayer, is a miracle!

Strengthen me against temptation of coveting what other people have, what other people do, what other people are.
