Reading and Prayer – May 16

Acts 1:6-11 – New Living Translation

When the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?”

He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

After saying this, he was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see him. As they strained to see him rising into heaven, two white-robed men suddenly stood among them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why are you standing here staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go!”

O God of all power and majesty,

you created the heavens and stretched them out.

You formed the earth and all that comes from it.

You give the breath of life to all who walk on the face of the earth.

Jesus, you conquered sin and death and now reign victorious.

You are our risen and ascended Lord; glory is due your name.

The former things have come to pass;

we now await the new things you will bring through the Holy Spirit.

We rejoice to be gathered in your name.

God of power and love,

you raised Jesus from death to life,

resplendent in glory to rule over all creation.

Free the world to rejoice in his peace,

to glory in his justice, and to live in his love.

Unite all humankind in Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, forever and ever. Amen.
