Reading and Prayer – January 16

Reading: Proverbs 3:1-10

My child, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, for they will provide a long and full life, and well-being for you.

Do not let mercy and truth leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will find favor and good understanding, in the sight of God and people.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding. Acknowledge him in all your ways, and he will make your paths straight.

Do not be wise in your own estimation; fear the Lord and turn away from evil. This will bring healing to your body, and refreshment to your inner self.

Honour the Lord from your wealth and from the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled completely, and your vats will overflow with new wine.

Prayer:

Gracious God, as we come to you in prayer, wherever we may be,

Direct our gratitude from feelings to words, from words to deeds.

Gracious God, as we come before you with hurts and concerns,

Heal our broken hearts and bind up our wounds

that we may come into your presence in health of mind and wholeness of spirit.

Gracious God, as we listen for you to speak to us, as we seek your direction,

Help us to discern your wisdom, your greatness, your compassion and your grace, as we honour the power and glory of your love.

Give us the gift of faith, to overcome our doubts, to still our fears,

To fix our hope not upon our own strength, not upon what the world may bring,

But upon you.

Amen.
