Today completes a set of readings on a prayer of King David.
1 Chronicles 29:18-19
18 “O Lord, the God of our ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, make your people always want to obey you. See to it that their love for you never changes. 19 Give my son Solomon the wholehearted desire to obey all your commands, laws, and decrees, and to do everything necessary to build this Temple, for which I have made these preparations.”
Loving God, fill us even now with the desire to want to follow you and obey you. Not out of fear or duty alone, but out of a love that pervades ever part of what we do and think. Allow the words of our mouths to enter our minds and sink into our hearts. Do not let the things that we say and pray be in vain. Change our hearts into hearts that follow you fully.
Give this same heart not only to us, but to all people, so that the world will be changed. So that the kingdom of heaven will pervade every part of this world so that we we can say “on earth, just as it is in heaven”. We know that this is what you are doing, and we ask you to show us how to follow you, not abstractly, but in the reality of our daily lives: in our work, in our play, in our words, in our smiles, in our generosity, and in all that we do. Thank you that we do all of this in response to the love that you have first shown to us; love that is not half-hearted, but full and true.
