Reading and Prayer – Friday, April 22

Luke 24: 44-49

44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”

45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

Jesus, it is marvellous to think that I don’t have the ability to understand who you are unless you open my mind and give me understanding! Why (oh why?) do I lean on my own understanding when it is so evident from both the Scriptures and my own experience that I cannot? I ask, Lord, for the self-discipline to seek Your guidance rather than my own or that of others, each day.

Jesus, I also marvel at your patience with us. It has all been written; it has all been revealed. And yet we wander, and stumble, and simply refuse to acknowledge what you have laid before us. I know that I am not nearly as patient with others as you so evidently are with me. Forgive me, Lord. And also, help me to walk in cheerful obedience—not like a “horse or mule, who have no understanding and must be controlled by bit and bridle.”
