Reading and Prayer for Friday, July 24

Psalms 136:1-9
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
His love endures forever.
Give thanks to the God of gods.
His love endures forever.
Give thanks to the Lord of lords:
His love endures forever.
to him who alone does great wonders,
His love endures forever.
who by his understanding made the heavens, His love endures forever.
who spread out the earth upon the waters, His love endures forever.
who made the great lights —
His love endures forever.
the sun to govern the day,
His love endures forever.
the moon and stars to govern the night;
His love endures forever.

As I near the end of my two weeks of quarantine, I am thankful that it has coincided with the visit of Comet Neowise, which reinvigorated my hobby of astronomy. One mind-bending aspect is that a telescope is a time machine – it takes time for light to travel from the stars to our eyes. A telescope enables us to look even farther away, and therefore further back in time. It takes a little over 8 minutes for the light of the sun to reach us and about 90 minutes for the light reflected from Saturn. That means the Saturn whose rings I marvel at through my scope is the Saturn of 90 minutes ago. Turning my telescope further east, I focus on the Andromeda galaxy, the light from which takes 2 million years to reach us!
This incredible thought makes the praise of the Psalmist all the more profound – God, who made the stars, including the Andromeda galaxy – God’s love endures forever. And forever is a very long time indeed.

Prayer

I give thanks to You, Lord, for You are good!
Your love endures forever.
You’ve saved me from myself time and time again.
Your love endures forever.
You’ve provided strength when I had none of my own.
Your love endures forever.
You comfort me when I need Your comfort.
Your love endures forever.
You are my light in times of darkness.
Your love endures forever.
You are my provider, my portion, my sufficiency.
Your love endures forever.
Your grace is enough.
Your love endures forever.
Amen!
