Reading and Prayer – February 9

Romans 13:6-7

This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

Father, it is tax time, and it is hard not to resent having to pay them! Help us to see the good our taxes do, and the blessings we have as a society: education, health care, pensions and the like. Help us to regard the financial resources with which you have blessed us as a tool, not only to provide for ourselves, but for the good of all society. May we learn that all we have comes from you, and so help us use our resources as you would have us use them, for the strengthening of the church, the help of the poor, the alleviation of suffering, and as an investment in your Kingdom. Amen.
