Reading and Prayer: December 13

December 13: Luke 1:46-56

And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me– holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, even as he said to our fathers.” Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.

The Third Sunday in Advent – December 13 – Joy: John 15:9-11

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.

Prayer: Dear God, you have turned the world upside down, and for the good of all. Help us to see the fingerprints of your actions in our world, and may the evidences of your activity ever fill us with joy. May the joy we seek not be found in the fleeting pleasure of things, but in the lasting and completeness of the joy you give. Amen.
