Daily Reading and Prayer – Sunday, September 6

From Paul’s letter to the Colossians:
We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God’s people— the faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven and about which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel that has come to you. In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world—just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood God’s grace.

Father, week after week, we set aside this time to praise you.
Week after week, you give us new reasons to praise!

Through the gift of creation, we see fresh wonders, as season follows season, as fruits and vegetables ripen, as cool nights bring relief from the heat of the day.

Through the gift of Jesus, we find new inspiration, and are astonished again and again at the power of his words and the strength of his love.

Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, we find encouragement, comfort, inspiration, and renewed challenge to respond to the needs of our world.

Through the glory of creation, through the power of the Gospel, through the presence of the Holy Spirit, we are reminded, O God, that you are near to us, every moment of every day.

And so we praise your glorious name.
Guard our hearts and minds, we pray.
Grant us your peace.

Father, we confess that all too often, we exchange your peace
for anxiety and worry.
Rather than seeking your truth, we fill our minds with false news.
Rather than seeking the noble, we entertain ourselves with the base.
Rather than doing the right, we do the convenient.
Rather than the pure, we seek the titillating.
Rather than the admirable, we are drawn to the scandalous.

We have sinned.
Turn our hearts and minds back to the true, the noble, the right, the pure, the lovely, the admirable;

May we be drawn to the excellent and the praiseworthy,
And so may our lives be filled with your peace.

Hear our confessions, O Lord; hear our silent prayer…

Assurance of Pardon

Hear the Good News!
Jesus gave us an incredible gift. Listen (John 14:27):
Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
Thanks be to God! When we turn to Christ, seeking to follow him as Saviour and Lord, we receive the gift of forgiveness and new life. In Jesus Christ, Our sins are forgiven. The peace of Christ is ours. Amen.
