Daily Reading and Prayer – Sunday, October 4

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 – “The Message”

Love never gives up.

Love cares more for others than for self.

Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have.

Love doesn’t strut,

Doesn’t have a swelled head,

Doesn’t force itself on others,

Isn’t always “me first,”

Doesn’t fly off the handle,

Doesn’t keep a record of the sins of others,

Doesn’t revel when others grovel,

Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,

Puts up with anything,

Trusts God always,

Always looks for the best,

Never looks back,

But keeps going to the end.

Colossians 3:12-14 – “The Voice”

Since you are all set apart by God, made holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with a holy way of life: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Put up with one another. Forgive. Pardon any offenses against one another, as the Lord has pardoned you, because you should act in kind. But above all these, put on love! Love is the perfect tie to bind these together.

Prayer

Almighty God, Father of all mercies;

Not because we deserve to be, but because of your grace, we are your people.

From our hearts, we thank you for your goodness and kindness to us, and to all.

We thank and praise you for creation, health, and the blessings of this life

But above all, for your immeasurable love,

in saving this world through our Lord Jesus Christ

We thank you for the opportunity of forgiveness, the challenge to forgive,

and the hope of heaven.

We pray that you would give us a full sense of your mercy,

so that we would be truly thankful; so that we would praise you,

not only with our voices but with our lives,

serving you and living as you would have us live,

in love, in truth, in peace, and in forgiveness.

Keep us faithful, we pray.

Deliver us from distraction, and lead us to your love.

Almighty God, you have given us grace to pray together.

You have promised that when we gather together in Your name,

Wherever we may be, that you will hear our prayers.

Our Lord, answer our prayers, according to what You know is best for us,

               and for others.

We pray for the lonely, the depressed, the oppressed,

the worried, the distraught, the sick, and the grieving.

We pray for the people of our world living in the shadow of Covid,

and the many who are living in its grip. .

We pray for people around the world suffering calamity, natural and man-made.

May your help, mercy, love, comfort and joy be with them all.

Lead us to people who are in need, that we may bring comfort, hope,

and tangible response.

Help us to be your instruments of answered prayer.

We pray for the sick in our congregation, community, and families near and far.

Answer also the prayers which we bring before you in silence.

Almighty God, Father of all mercies;

Not because we deserve to be, but because of your grace, we are your servants.

Help us to serve you in ways that make a difference, we pray in Jesus name, as he has taught us, saying,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation,

               but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,

forever and ever.  Amen.

Amen.
