Daily Reading and Prayer – Sunday, August 9

1 John 5:1-5
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

We worship you, Father, for you are with us this and every day.
You have come to us in your son, Jesus.
You are within us by your Hoy Spirit.
And so we worship you, our Present and Living God,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one God, now and forevermore.

Holy and loving God, as we worship you today,
we long for your Spirit to both comfort and challenge us,
to help us become more holy and more loving.
In a world that does not understand repentance,
we pray for new understanding, humility, patience, and discipline
that will help us die to sin and live for Jesus.

Even as we ask that you be with us, Lord God,
we confess before you our sinfulness;
we have hungered after that which does not satisfy;
we have compromised with evil;
we have doubted your power to protect us.
Forgive our lack of faith; have mercy on our weakness.
Restore in us such trust and love that we may walk in your ways
and delight in doing your will.
Hear our silent confessions, O Lord…

Assurance of Pardon

The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance,
that Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners.
He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross,
so that we, free from sins, might live for righteousness;
By his sacrifice we are forgiven; by his wounds we have been healed.
