Daily Reading and Prayer – Sunday, August 16 2020

John introduces his second letter by referring to himself as “the elder” – in Greek, this reads, “The Presbyterian!”
He addresses his second letter to the Chosen Lady – which is actually his way of addressing as entire church. Churches, as the Bride of Christ, are always referred to in the feminine. The children of which John writes are the members of that community of faith.

2 John 1-6
The elder,
To the lady chosen by God and to her children, whom I love in the truth—and not I only, but also all who know the truth—because of the truth, which lives in us and will be with us forever:
Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son, will be with us in truth and love.
It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father commanded us. And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another. And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.

Prayer of Adoration and Confession – Zion, August 16, 2020

Eternal God,
your Son Jesus Christ
is the way, the truth and the life for all creation;
Christ, you are the Savior, the Way to the Father,
The Truth we depend on, the Life that we need.
Holy Spirit, you guide our steps on the Way,
You lead us into all truth,
You fill us with life eternal.
Give us the grace to walk in Christ’s way,
to rejoice in his truth,
and to share his risen life;
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God now and for ever.

We confess, Father, that while we recognise Jesus
as the Way, the Truth, the Life,
Way have gone our own way, believed untrue words,
squandered many of the opportunities of life.
Our way has led us to places we should not go.
Untrue words have distorted our sense of self and the worth of others.
Lost opportunities have resulted in much of life passing us by,
Impoverishing our relationships with others.
Set our feet upon your path, we pray.
Help, encourage, and inspire us to walk in the way of Jesus,
To walk in truth and love.
Hear our silent confessions, Lord…

Assurance of Pardon:

Hear the Good News!

God has shown us the way out of darkness, selfishness and sin.
God has opened our eyes to the truth of the Gospel.
God has granted us new life, life now and life eternal,
Through the birth, death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus.
He is the Way, the Truth and the Life, bringing us to the Father’s love.

Responding to God’s mercy, forgiveness and grace,
May we, from this moment forward, resolve to walk in truth and love. Amen.
