Daily Reading and Prayer submitted by Tom Deelstra

Psalm 46:1,10-11

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. (v.1)

Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. (v. 10-11)

I consider my Oma to be a hero of the faith. To her grandchildren, she embodied the fruits of the spirit. She was a prayer warrior and a faithful daily reader of God’s word. Though her life story was filled with hardships, she was always cheerful and kind and grateful for what the Lord has given to her. Oma passed away in 2013. Psalm 46 was read at her funeral. This Psalm provided comfort and assurance in a period of mourning, and I’ve thought about it often since. I’ve found comfort again in this Psalm during this pandemic. God is with us. Be still.

Holy, merciful Father,

You are our refuge and strength. In these uncertain times, may we be drawn ever closer to you. You promise to never leave or forsake us. You are our fortress.
We thank you for the legacies of the saints who have gone before us. Their lives are a testimony to you. May we draw strength and courage from their example.
We pray for forgiveness of our sins and we thank you that we are cleansed by the blood of your Son. Help us to live our lives worthy of the calling we have received.

In Jesus’ name we pray,
