Daily Reading and Prayer submitted by Jaycee Sabapathy

Psalms 51:9-12

9 Hide your face from my sins
and blot out all my iniquity.

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

People often say that despite the tragedy and injustices in our world, people are ultimately ‘good’. But this Psalms reminds me of the realities of our human nature. We are not good, we are sinful at our very core and cannot and will not become ‘good people’ separate from God’s grace. Once we acknowledge and accept this, we can stop fruitlessly striving to become better on our own and call out to God for His help.

Prayer:

O Lord, in a world that denies the presence of sin, let us be honest with you, ourselves and others about our failings. Let us come to you vulnerable in our brokenness, longing to be made right with you with a repentant heart. For through Christ, we have the gift of your forgiveness and the hope and joy of salvation. Please continue to work your goodness in us until the day you will grant us a pure and sanctified heart. And let us always remember that no matter how bad our thoughts or actions, you offer us your forgiveness, sustain us with your Spirit and love us for all of our days.

Amen.
