Proverbs 17 – Selected Verses
1 Better a dry crust with peace and quiet
than a house full of feasting, with strife.
3 The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold,
but the Lord tests the heart.
5 Whoever mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker;
whoever gloats over disaster will not go unpunished.
6 Children’s children are a crown to the aged,
and parents are the pride of their children.
9 Whoever would foster love covers over an offense,
but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.
14 Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam;
so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.
17 A friend loves at all times,
and a brother is born for a time of adversity.
22 A cheerful heart is good medicine,
but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
Prayer (from Zion worship, Sunday, August 23)
Lord God, with another week gone and another week ahead, we look to you for help, in living the kind of lives that are a blessing to others, a service to you, and a fulfillment of all the potential you have placed within us.
Help us to be faithful to those who love us, and loyal to those who are our friends, so that we may never cause them worry or distress.
Help us to live in forgiveness and kindness, so that, like Christ, our lives may bring good to those around us.
Help us to live in diligence and in cheerful effort, so that we may use to the full the gifts and talents with which you have provided us.
Help us to live in goodness and purity, that we may resist the many harmful things which tempt us, and that we may be a help to others who are tempted.
Help us to live in sympathy and in gentleness, so that we may bring comfort to the sorrowing and compassion to the needy.
Help us to live in peace and in self-control, so that no anger and no passion may disturb our own sense of peace and the peace of others.
Help us to live with a heart of love for you, O God, so that in doing your will, in living as you would have us live, we might find purpose and fulfillment for our lives.
Lord God, as you hear our prayer, give us strength, determination and inspiration to live as the children of God, as the brothers and sisters of Christ; help us to live in such a way that we ourselves are changed, and that we might bring change to our world.
We pray for the many for whom this week past has brought hardship, sorrow and pain;
We pray for the many for whom this coming week holds little foreseeable hope;
We pray for the lonely, the frightened, the powerless and the sick; We pray for those who grieve.
Hear our silent prayer, O Lord
Eternal God, who makes all things new, we thank you that today you have allowed us to begin another week in your presence. May our lives demonstrate the difference you have made in us all.
through Jesus Christ, who taught us to pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the Kingdom, and the Power and the Glory,
Forever and ever. Amen.
