Daily Reading and Prayer – Saturday, August 1

Psalm 144 was written in a time of war. I have not lived through a war, but my parents did, and I heard many stories from them about how they thought they would not live to see the next day – and many of their family did not. They came to Canada to seek a life of peace for their children, and peace is what we have enjoyed – their prayers for their children were answered, Thank God.

I too, pray for peace for my children. Psalm 144 does the same – first praying that God will help secure victory, and then concluding with a prayer for the prosperity of their children and of the land. Remember always to pray for those in countries at war, particularly for the parents of children, praying that their sons and daughters would live to see a time of peace and prosperity.

Psalm 144 – selected verses

5Part your heavens, Lord, and come down;
touch the mountains, so that they smoke.
6 Send forth lightning and scatter the enemy;
shoot your arrows and rout them.
7 Reach down your hand from on high;
deliver me and rescue me

12 Then our sons in their youth
will be like well-nurtured plants,
and our daughters will be like pillars
carved to adorn a palace.
13 Our barns will be filled
with every kind of provision.
Our sheep will increase by thousands,
by tens of thousands in our fields;
14 our oxen will draw heavy loads.
There will be no breaching of walls,
no going into captivity,
no cry of distress in our streets.
15 Blessed is the people of whom this is true;
blessed is the people whose God is the Lord.

Prayer
Dear Ruler of the Universe, Our hearts and prayers go out to those in countries where there is civil unrest, government problems, revolution or war. We thank you that you are the God of history who has actively sought men and women after your own heart in all nations.
We pray for justice. We pray that you will raise up leaders who will do right and who will be vigilant against the abuse of power. Bring forward leaders who will not exploit the people, will not suppress minorities and religious freedom, will not misuse military power and will not pollute the environment.
We pray that you will create places of refuge for those affected by this time of unrest. Be with those who are forced to flee their homes for safety. Provide for their needs. Care for the children, ill and elderly. Watch over them and protect them as they travel. Provide temporary places of refuge that are safe, clean and well supplied. And prevent factions and military forces from interfering with aid arriving to those in need.
May your law become the basis for social and government law so that this area might become a place of prosperity and peace.
Please go with those who are on the front lines of positive change during this time of unrest. May they be strong and courageous and may they know that you have called them and that you are with them. Help them fear not and to trust in you.
We pray for those who have lost loved ones during this time of unrest. May the lives that have been sacrificed be always remembered and honored. Be with those who are mourning the death of family, friends and neighbors. Comfort and sustain them with your loving presence and your promises of eternal life.
We pray for peacemakers and peacekeepers. We pray for all of the surrounding countries and world leaders that they might be guided to actions that will help alleviate the troubles and sufferings of the people in this area of the world. We pray for the churches and religious leaders that they might do your will and continue to stand fast to the moral compass of your Word in face of opposition and persecution.
May you become the ruler of all hearts here on earth in order for our earth to become your kingdom where we live together as brothers and sisters in love, peace, prosperity and submission to your will. We pray in the strong name of our Lord and our God. Amen.
