Daily Reading and Prayer – Friday August 21

I’m having a tough time narrowing down these readings from Proverbs, as I always find myself wanting to include the whole chapter! However, I’ve decided to limit my selections each day to a half-dozen that really stand out to me in any one particular chapter. I encourage you to read the rest of the chapter on your own, and find your own favourites every day!

Proverbs 11 – Selected Proverbs

2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace,
but with humility comes wisdom.

3 The integrity of the upright guides them,
but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.

13 A gossip betrays a confidence,
but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.

14 For lack of guidance a nation falls,
but victory is won through many advisers.

17 Those who are kind benefit themselves,
but the cruel bring ruin on themselves.

25 A generous person will prosper;
whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.

Dear Lord, we see again and again in our world how the proud and arrogant take no thought for the concerns and needs of others. We see again and again how the cruel and uncaring act as though there is no consequence to their misdeeds.

Help us, Father, to see through the deception of our world, and to live in a way that makes a lasting difference for good. May our thoughts, words and actions bring help and comfort to all. May our lives be a blessing, not only to ourselves, but to others.

And so may we reflect the life of Christ, as his followers, as your children, as the citizens of the Kingdom of God.
