Psalm 97 takes us to places increasingly unfamiliar to our modern sensibilities. First, it attempts to paint a picture of the awesome majesty and power of God – a sense of wonder we have largely lost. Secondly, look how central the justice of God is in the Psalms – we rely upon the courts for justice, but the Psalmist wisely sees true justice as emanating from the very nature of God. Finally, look where the Psalmist finds joy: “Light shines on the righteous and joy on the upright in heart.”
